Volvo has confirmed the pricing and specification for its renamed EC40 and EX40 models.

It has also introduced a new Single Motor Extended Range powertrain for both models.

Pricing for the EC40 starts at £52,555, while the EX40 starts at £45,955.

The new Single Motor Extended Range variant offers up to 346 miles of range in the EC40 and 343 miles in the EX40. It has a 78kWh battery (with 75kWh usable capacity) and a 252PS electric motor on the rear axle. The maximum charging speed for replenishing the battery is 140kW.

Volvo has retained its Core and Plus trim grades, while the range-topping Ultimate is now called Ultra. The EC40 is only available in Plus and Ultra, now.

The existing Single Motor (69kWh/232PS) and Twin Motor (82kWh/408PS) powertrains remain available, alongside the new Single Motor Extended Range. Top spec Ultra models can only be specified with the larger battery sizes.

The brand renamed the two cars in order to align their naming structure with the rest of its line up.

The C40 is now called EC40, while electric versions of the XC40 are badged EX40.

It enables the brand's electric cars to be more easily identified. The EC40 and EX40 now sit alongside the new EX30, while the EX90 will soon join the range.

Petrol versions of the XC40 will continue to be called XC40, aligned with the XC60 and XC90.

Volvo has also removed the 'Recharge' name from its plug-in hybrid models, now identified purely by their T6 or T8 suffix, and the XC60 plug-in hybrid line-up has gained an entry-level Core version, bringing the starting price down by more than £4,000.

“By aligning our trailblazing first electric models with the rest of our electric car portfolio, we simplify choice for consumers as we continue to electrify our line-up and refresh our hybrids,” says Björn Annwall, Volvo's chief commercial officer and deputy CEO.

Volvo is introducing a new Performance software pack for the EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants, and as an upgrade for the previous model year in selected markets. The Performance software pack increases power output by 34PS for faster acceleration and includes unique pedal mapping for quicker accelerator response. A unique ‘Performance’ drive mode unlocks the full 442PS output.

The Performance software will be offered as an optional upgrade pack when ordering a new car and via the Volvo Cars app. Drivers of previous model-year 2024 C40 and fully electric XC40 Recharge cars can purchase and download the software using their smartphone.
