Mercedes-Benz is streamlining its model range with the launch of the new CLE to replace coupe and convertible versions of both the C-Class and E-Class.

The CLE coupe will arrive in November, followed by the CLE convertible in early 2024.

A plug-in hybrid variant is in development, but from launch the car will be offered with a selection of mild-hybrid petrol or diesel engines.

The CLE 220d will kick-off the line-up with a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 200PS and emitting upwards of 123g/km of CO2.

A 2.0-litre petrol engine will be offered with 204PS (CLE 200) or 258PS (CLE 300). These have CO2 emissions from 145 - 173g/km. Both are available with all-wheel-drive.

The CLE 400 uses a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine, produces 381PS and emits from 176g/km of CO2.

All the powertrains use a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The CLE's footprint is almost identical to that of the E-Class coupe, gaining 15mm in length and retaining the same width. The car's wheelbase is slightly shorter, meaning rear legroom has reduced, when compared to an E-Class coupe. Interior space is much larger then in the most recent C-Class coupe, however.
