8 2022 Mercedes GLC

Mercedes has pulled the wraps off its new GLC SUV, which enters its second generation with a more upmarket interior and three plug-in hybrid engines.

The newcomer replaces one of Mercedes’ most popular models, competing head-to-head with the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60. It was developed alongside the new C-Class, allowing for increased electrification and new technology.

Key to the GLC’s fleet offering is a trio of plug-in hybrid engines. There’s a 300e and 400e, both powered by a 2.0-litre petrol unit, and a 300de diesel.

The GLC 300e has 313PS and a zero-emission range of 65-75 miles, while the 400e manages the same range but serves up 381PS. The GLC 300de has 333PS and a slightly shorter electric range of 63-73 miles. A 31.2kWh battery is used across all the plug-in hybrids, which features 60kW charging for a 30-minute recharge.

Mild hybrid 200 and 300 petrol engines are also available, along with a 220d.

Air suspension is optionally available and standard on the plug-in hybrid models. All GLCs are all-wheel-drive.

While the exterior design is similar to the outgoing GLC, the new model’s interior has been changed significantly. It uses the same architecture as the C-Class, with a large portrait touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard and the latest MBUX operating system.

UK pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed, but Mercedes said the new GLC has a higher level of standard equipment that before and will be offered with fewer options to streamline the ordering process.

Among the technical highlights are digital LED headlights, which can project warnings onto the road surface, and a revised lane keeping system that uses the car’s 360-degree cameras to enable enhanced operation.

There’s been a minor change to the car’s dimensions, most notably a 60mm increase in length. Boot space has grown by 50 litres, to 600 litres.

The new Mercedes GLC will go on sale in the autumn.
