DS Automobiles has confirmed it will launch a new C-segment hatchback in 2021 that is set to rival the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

In keeping with DS’s ambition to only sell electric and hybrid cars by 2025, the new DS 4 will be available with an E-Tense plug-in hybrid powertrain from launch.

The car is yet to be revealed, but DS says it will have a “daring new design” with a body to wheel ratio that is unique in the segment.

Technological highlights include a new Extended Head Up Display, which projects warning messages and navigation instructions onto the windscreen, so they appear directly on the road ahead.

The car will also feature a new type of infotainment screen that can be controlled by gesture rather than touch.

Level 2 autonomous driving is enabled by DS Drive Assist, which uses radar and camera sensors to provide adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.

Camera technology is also used as part of the Active Scan suspension, which monitors the road ahead and adjusts the damping to improve ride quality.

Enhancements to the PSA EMP2 platform are expected to deliver improvements in handling and driveability, although it’s like the DS 4 will be predominantly focused on comfort.

The E-Tense powertrain is the same as the one already used across the PSA range and will deliver 225PS with a zero-emission range of about 30 miles.

It’s likely the DS 4 will also be offered with petrol and diesel engines in some markets, although details of the line-up are yet to be revealed.

The DS 4 is likely to debut in early 2021 and arrive in the UK before the end of the year.
