Audi’s second-generation A1 premium hatchback will be available only as a five-door, with the manufacturer opting not to continue with the range’s three-door variants.

At launch, the car, which can now be ordered ahead of first deliveries at the end of the month, will be available with a 116PS 1.0-litre petrol engine, offering CO2 emissions of 108g/km and a combined fuel economy of 58.9mpg according to the WLTP test procedure in both manual and S Tronic automatic versions.

It will be priced from £18,540 for the entry-level SE model, rising to £23,180 for the S line time level. A Sport equipment grade is also available.

Soon after, the range will increase to include an entry-level 95PS 25 TFSI engine and increase to 150PS in the 1.5-litre 35 TFSI.

A 200PS TFSI will power the performance-focused flagship model.

At 4.03 metres, the new A1 is 56mm longer than its predecessor, while the boot capacity has increased 65 litres to 335. With the rear seats folded, this rises to 1,090 litres.

A number of driver assistance systems are available. Standard across the range is lane departure warning, speed limiter, and pre-sense front.

This sees a radar sensor recognise critical situations involving other vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists, and warns the driver of the hazard through acoustic and visual alerts.

At the same time, it prepares for a possible full brake application and, if necessary, initiates automatic emergency braking to prevent an imminent collision or reduce its impact.

Other available systems include adaptive speed assist, a reversing camera, and park assist.

Each model; features, as standard, a fully digital instrument cluster with a high-resolution, 10.25-inch display.

All versions can be equipped with an optional Technology Pack, which adds a 10.1-inch infortainment touchscreen and a higher specification Audi virtual Cockpit.
