Volkswagen has released an early image of its forthcoming T-Cross small SUV, which will be given its world premiere in the autumn.

Originally presented as a study at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the car will give Volkswagen its fifth SUV range: the others are T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg.

The production T-Cross will be based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform. It will be front-wheel drive and feature a back seat which can be adjusted lengthwise to increase either knee room or luggage space.

Safety features such as Front Assist (ambient traffic monitoring system) and Lane Assist (lane departure warning system) will be standard.
