Southampton City Council has cut more than 10% off the annual tyre bill for its 460-strong fleet after a move to Michelin extended replacement intervals.
The decision to fit Michelin began in April 2013 and saw an immediate tyre spend reduction of 11% in 2013-2014, versus the previous policy, which had seen a mixture of different brands fitted.
In the following year, 2014-2015, Southampton City Council’s tyre spend dropped by nearly 3% more, as greater numbers of Michelin tyres were rolled out.
In total, tyre expenditure has dropped from £127,807.87 in 2012-2013, to £110,656.43 in 2014-2015, with savings projected to continue into 2016.
The council runs a total of 360 vans, 37 refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), 17 heavy goods vehicles, 13 minibuses, six road sweepers and four cars – which are each included on the policy and deliver vital services across the city.
Alfonso Mata, fleet services systems administrator for Southampton City Council, said: “All local authorities are working hard to maximise value from their budgets and fitting Michelin tyres on the Crown Commercial Service (CCS) framework has delivered noticeable savings to our fleet running costs.
"We’re getting improved longevity and durability from every Michelin tyre we fit; it’s particularly noticeable on the RCV fleet, which is arguably the toughest on tyres.
“Although the RCVs don’t do high mileages, they carry out some of the most demanding work and risk coming into frequent contact with the kerb during daily collections.
"In our experience the Michelin fitments offer better damage resistance and last longer than the tyres we fitted previously.
"This not only means extended replacement intervals, it reduces wheel interventions and fleet downtime."
The RCVs are used intensively for up to eight hours a day, five days a week, collecting refuse and recycling materials from across the city for delivery to waste transfer stations.
The Michelin policy sees technicians from ATS Euromaster’s Southampton centre provide an onsite fitment service for the council.
The technicians also regroove as many tyres as possible, extending tyre life by up to 25% each time to make full use of the additional layers of base rubber built into all new Michelin truck tyres.
Once the regrooved tyre has worn, it is retreaded by Michelin into a Remix tyre – providing almost identical performance to that of a new Michelin truck tyre – while reducing environmental impact and raw material consumption.
