Norton Canes (Roadchef) services on the M6 toll has been chosen as England’s best motorway services. The station was also named the nation’s favourite in 2018, according to the Motorway Services User Survey, which was carried out by Transport Focus.

A total of 11,600 customers were asked about their experience at 111 motorway services in England. Feedback was given on toilets, staffing and food and drink.

Nine in ten (90%) of visitors were satisfied with the national service stations provided.

Over half (59%) of the people surveyed insisted that the food and drink provided was value for money, showing a decrease on the satisfaction reported in 2018.

Severn View service station on the M48 (Moto) was voted last (111) in the rankings.

Transport Focus chief executive, Anthony Smith, said: “Motorway users tell us they have a good experience when visiting service areas, but it’s clear that many do not feel the experience is good value for money. They want pleasant, well maintained facilities with good quality food choices.

“Motorway services continue to play an important safety role providing drivers with the opportunity to take a break.”

“Drivers in the survey confirm they feel less stressed and are more alert after stopping at motorway services.”

Further investment and refurbishment was noticed by drivers at Thurrock (Moto). The recently upgraded service station has the largest increase in satisfaction with 25% growth, taking its 2019 rating to 93%, rather than the 68% it received last year.

Westmorland, operator of four sites in the survey, achieved the highest overall satisfaction score with 98%, making it the only operator to see an improvement on its overall 2018 score.

Overall the staff were rated positively by 97% of visitors. 89% of visitors were satisfied with the cleanliness of the toilets.

However, 59% of visitors thought the food was value for money, showing a decrease on last year by 7%.

A professional driver said: “Very good place here for dinner and for resting. Staff in the shop and food outlets are very friendly.”

A visitor making a leisure trip said: “It's all very nice – there’s a good variety of food and the toilets are excellent. I'm very happy, it’s a good break from the road after I’ve had a long drive!”
