Lamborghini has expanded the powertrain line-up for the Urus SUV to include a plug-in hybrid.

The Urus SE is not the brand's first plug-in hybrid but it is the first to have a significant zero-emission range.

More than 37 miles is promised from the car's 25.9kWh battery, which may pique the interest of company directors and senior leaders.

The Urus SE's electric motor is paired with a 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine. Maximum power output is 800PS and 950Nm - enough to shift the large SUV from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds.

Lamborghini claims the new powertrain has reduced the car's emissions by 80%. Final homologation is still pending but if the official CO2 figure falls below 50g/km then the Urus SE could sit in the 12% benefit-in-kind tax band.

Thanks to the introduction of the hybrid powertrain, the six Urus driving modes are combined with four new Electric Performance Strategies (EPS), for a total of eleven options. The Strada, Sport, and Corsa modes (for road and track use), and the Neve, Sabbia, and Terra modes (for surfaces with a different grip than asphalt) are now accompanied by the EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge options.

In each mode, the car's air suspension system has been specifically calibrated to balance comfort and dynamic performance.

“In just a few years, the Urus has become our brand’s bestseller, enabling Lamborghini to attract new customers and strengthen its position in the most important markets. With the Urus SE, we’ve taken another step towards the future in line with our Direzione Cor Tauri strategy, moving ahead with the electrification of the range and the path toward decarbonisation that began with the introduction of the Revuelto super sports car in March 2023."

Pricing for the Urus SE is expected to start at more than £200,000, when it launches later this year.
