Licence Bureau is to showcase its Speed Bingo speed awareness quiz at Fleet Live 2019 next month.

The company estimates a lack of road speed knowledge among UK business drivers could cost businesses more than £50 million each year in lost productivity.

The calculation, which is based on an estimated 480,000 business drivers attending day-long speed awareness courses, has led the driver licence validation service to deploy Speed Bingo to 1,500 drivers at its driver training sessions over the past 12 months.

Fleet Live is the leading event for the fleet management community and gives decision-makers the chance to face future challenges and opportunities together with two days of learning, sharing and networking on October 8-9 at the NEC in Birmingham.

Licence Bureau will be running a simplified version of its Speed Bingo quiz at the event.

Martin Starkey, Licence Bureau training manager and creator of Speed Bingo, said: “It really is startling to think that of the more than 1,500 business drivers to have attended our courses in the past 12 months, only 0.1% know the national speed limits in 16 different, basic scenarios.

“With the increasing use of automated deterrents and roadside cameras, this lack of knowledge could potentially be costing employers more than £50m in lost productivity per annum with employees caught speeding attending speed awareness courses.”

Starkey said that as well as the challenge of lost productivity, employee duty of care also falls on an organisation’s shoulders.

He added: “Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a duty to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work, including whilst driving for work, of their employees.

“Having a thorough understanding of the laws of the road is fundamental to ensuring this.

“It is therefore essential that companies continuously reiterate within their policy documents and driver handbooks just what the rules are, especially in relation to the law.”
