The BVRLA is calling for the government to provide certainty, focus and fairness for the fleet sector in the transition to zero-emission road transport in its Future of Fleets Manifesto.

As the next General Election must take place before the end of January 2025, the BVRLA says the time is ripe for the vehicle rental and leasing sectors to set out the steps required form the government over the coming years.

The industry body launched its manifesto at its Parliamentary Reception event last week, which saw MPs, BVRLA members and stakeholders from across the fleet, mobility and energy sectors discuss the future of road transport.

Key asks in the document have been drawn from member input and the findings of the BVRLA’s latest Road to Zero Report Card.

Car, van and truck needs are represented, as are those of fleet operators, the rental sector and leasing companies.

Toby Poston, BVRLA director of corporate affairs, said: “With a general election on the horizon, our voice needs to be heard now to influence the transport policies of tomorrow.

“Our Future of Fleets Manifesto outlines the pathways to a successful transition and where the government should be playing an active role.

“Greater certainty around tax and regulation will provide the clarity that fleets need to carryon investing in the transition.

“By focusing on the key pain points we can unleash a new wave of zero emission transport use cases. With more fairness we will ensure that no road users are left behind.”

The Future of Fleets Manifesto is split into three areas:

  • Certainty: reinforce the foundations. This includes locking in the ZEV mandate, publishing a transport tax road map and develop and update detailed plans.
  • Focus: support commercial vehicles. This includes increased fiscal support, removing regulatory barriers and improving charging infrastructure.
  • Fairness: leave none behind. This includes supporting used ZEVs, unlocking the rental sector and increasing the number of public chargers with cheaper rates.
