A potential hazard of creating a car that aims to be all things to all men is that the vehicle in question turns out to fall short in all areas.

That is the scenario Peugeot flirted with with the 3008 crossover – a car the manufacturer says offers the flexibility and space of an MPV, the rugged looks of an SUV and the dynamics of a family hatchback.

And while it is inconceivable that any car can cover all these areas as well as a specialised vehicle, if first impressions of our new long-termer are anything to go by, then the 3008 has made an excellent attempt at it.

It’s exterior appearance will no doubt be divisive, but the benefits of its tall, slab-sided appearance are obvious when you climb inside.

It offers a commanding driving position, plenty of room and a clever twin-level boot arrangement with split rear tailgate, offering 512 litres of load capacity (1,604 with rear seats folded).

The 100bhp 1.6 HDi engine is already proving to be a strong performer – both from a performance point of view and economy, with an early test average of 52.1mpg – not far from its official combined figure of 55.3mpg.CO2 emissions are 137g/km.
