Review

The Mercedes-Benz CLS has established itself as a more exclusive alternative to the Mercedes E-Class.

Offered only with six-or eight cylinder engines from launch, the CLS ‘four-door coupé’ was appealing for drivers who wanted to stand out from default saloon executive choices.

But in 2011, driven by demand for lower CO2 emissions, the lead-in version of the new second-generation CLS will have four cylinders.

Backed by a price advantage of as much as £3,000, the lead-in 250 CDI should be an attractive proposition for a completely new set of customers, believes Mercedes-Benz UK product manager Nick Williams.

“This is a no-compromise model we think many senior managers will aspire to drive and the fact that it adheres to the CO2 policies at many companies makes that possible.”

But initially it will launch with six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, with four-cylinder diesel and V8 petrol to follow soon after.

The new version is longer, wider and taller and boasts 520 litres luggage capacity, but weight reduction and a 10% improvement in aerodynamics allow up to 25% better economy.

The car is lighter thanks to greater use of aluminium panels and a new steering system underlines sporty appeal.

Despite its generous proportions, the 350 CDI has impressive handling.

It surges from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds and has ample power for rapid overtaking at motorway speeds. Mechanical noise is minimal and detail attention to door mirror seals and damping mean progress is quiet.

Verdict

With more aggressive styling, the latest CLS loses some of its sleekness in profile.

But the 350 CDI remains elegant and is a rewarding driver’s car with more spacious bodywork adding to its credentials.
