Following the launch of the Mayor’s Road Task Force report by Boris Johnson, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) is calling for more flexibility to include out-of-hours deliveries in the capital.
Whilst FTA welcomes the overall findings within the Mayor of London’s report which provides a strategic review of London’s roads to enable people and vehicles to move more efficiently on the capital’s roads, the Association is asking for further measures regarding freight and deliveries in and around the capital to be ‘taken-on-board’.
With over a million more people expected to swell London’s population over the next 15-20 years, demand for delivery and servicing activity is set to increase. The industry and London government must work together to develop innovative solutions to this challenge.
A key element of this is making more efficient and flexible use of the capital’s roads. This means enabling quiet out-of-hours deliveries to ensure that the increase in freight traffic is not forced into peak hours.
FTA is today launching its own vision which highlights what Transport for London and the boroughs must do to support an efficient logistics industry – ‘Supporting economic growth in London – Efficient logistics’.
Natalie Chapman, FTA’s Head of Policy for London said:
“Too many deliveries are forced into the morning peak, due to the constraints of night time delivery curfews. We need to make better use of London’s road space throughout the day and night. It is crucial that the boroughs work with industry to relax these restrictions and the time is right for a proper review of the London Lorry Control Scheme which restricts the movement of lorries overnight.”
